Getting Your Business Voice Heard

The Roanoke Regional Chamber of Commerce is a prominent and influential voice for the region’s business community.

Because the political process is continuous, our full time lobbyist and members of the Chamber’s legislative committees track public policy decisions at the local, state, and federal level throughout the year.

The Chamber’s public policy division consists of four areas on work and the following activities:

  • Transportation Advocacy Group
    • Regional Transportation Coalition
  • Council on Workforce Innovation and Connections
    • Career Focus
  • Legislative Advocacy
    • and VA West Coalition
  • Global Business Owners Committee




  • Recruitment of Board and Committee members with policy or politically oriented backgrounds.
  • Recruitment of young professionals with leadership potential.

Monitor and evaluate local, state, and federal policy-making activities

  • Attend public hearings meetings, and relevant policy forums
  • Meet with elected officials and other relevant policy-making agents.

Advise members on policymaking impacts

  • Evaluate public policy using empirical data and evidence based research.
  • Assess how politics and ideology shape policy-making decisions
  • Develop multiple channels of communication to advise stakeholders on local, state, and federal policy decisions.
  • Develop feedback mechanisms to measure stakeholder responses.
  • Develop policy positions consistent with the Chamber’s mission.

Advocate for the Chamber’s position on policy issues at the local, state and federal level.

  • Communicate with elected officials in a concise, coordinated, and credible manner.
  • Evaluate performance of elected officials at the local, state, and federal level.


The Chamber also strives to play a leading role in fostering dialogue between the business community and our elected officials. Below is a list of annual Chamber events.

Virginia West Business and Legislative Coalition

The Roanoke Regional Chamber has also been instrumental in establishing the Virginia West Business and Legislative Coalition (VAWest), a coalition of 12 chambers in Western Virginia. VAWest provides a forum for  advocacy for issues that impact the broader region.
